Is London Southend Airport in the oyster/contactless zone? No the oyster/contactless zone ends at Shenfield, where a valid ticket will be required to continue your journey to the airport.
Tilbury is just beyond the valid area - you can't use Oyster to pay for the train to Tilbury. If you want to go through to Tilbury, you'd need to go to the ticket office at Fenchurch St (or West Ham if you change there) and buy a rail ticket for the last portion of the journey.
Is Grays Station in the Oyster travel zone? Although outside the London fare zones, Grays Station is part of the Oyster card pay-as-you-go network.
When it comes to getting around, London is divided into 'zones' 1-6, with 'Zone 1' being the city centre and 'Zone 6' being the outskirts of the city. The system itself exists as a method for TfL (Transport for London) to calculate a customer's travel distance and charge accordingly.
Details have emerged of the stations in Essex and Hertfordshire which will be given the London "smart card" system Oyster, after Dutch company Abellio was awarded the Greater Anglia rail franchise. It takes over from National Express East Anglia next year.

Services. c2c operates services on the London, Tilbury and Southend line from London Fenchurch Street to the northern Thames Gateway area of southern Essex, including Grays, Leigh-on-Sea and Southend-on-Sea.

Oyster pay as you go is accepted on Chiltern Railways services in the London Fare Zones only. You must touch in and touch out to validate your journey; otherwise you may be liable to a Penalty Fare. Oyster Extension Permits or paper extensions must be bought before boarding.
The Oyster card scheme is the preferred and most cost effective method of paying for travel on TfL services. East Croydon rail station is within Travelcard Zone 5, but all Tramlink stops are within Travelcard Zone 4.
