Ascorbic acid has been shown to kill various cancer cell lines at pharmacologic concentrations. We found that Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive Burkitt lymphoma (BL) cells were more susceptible to ascorbic acid-induced cell killing than EBV-negative BL cells or EBV-transformed lymphoblastoid cells (LCLs).
Scientists have known for decades that EBV, which causes an infectious disease named mononucleosis or “kissing disease,” is also linked to several autoimmune disorders, including multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
The prognosis for Epstein-Barr virus infection is good. Almost all people infected with EBV recover completely in about one to three months. Neurological changes usually completely resolve, although a few adults may have some deficits. Although most infections become latent, most remain asymptomatic.

Beware: There are other diseases that can mimic mononucleosis:
- Cytomegalovirus (CMV) mononucleosis.
- Toxoplasma gondii infection.
- Acute retroviral syndrome due to HIV infection.
- HHV-6 (human herpes virus 6)
- Adenovirus infection.
- Primary infection with herpes simplex virus type 1.
- Strep pyogenes pharyngitis (“strep throat”)
Some otherwise healthy people with CMV infection develop a mononucleosis-like syndrome. CMV is a type of herpes virus. All herpes viruses remain in your body for the rest of your life after infection. If your immune system becomes weakened in the future, this virus may have the chance to reactivate, causing symptoms.
Mononucleosis is frequently mistaken for other illnesses, such as strep throat, chronic fatigue, or another infection, because the symptoms can overlap, Ramilo says.
Mononucleosis is highly contagious and will make your daughter feel greatly fatiqued for weeks. Definitely do not attempt to travel with this illness.
Triggers for the reactivation of EBV include anything that places an increased burden on the immune system, such as: Unmanaged stress. A secondary or co- infection. Nutrient deficiencies (especially those crucial for immune function)
Our data provide evidence that high dose intravenous vitamin C therapy has a positive effect on disease duration and reduction of viral antibody levels. Plasma levels of ascorbic acid and vitamin D were correlated with levels of antibodies to EBV.
Most people who have mono (infectious mononucleosis) will have it only once. But rarely, mononucleosis symptoms may recur months or even years later. Most cases of mononucleosis are caused by infection with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV).

It can take longer than a year to truly resolve symptoms, but most people should feel some benefits within the first 4-6 weeks.
