Last year, Quicken 2018 made headlines by going subscription-only. Before, you had up to three years to use the software. However, now you must subscribe and pay on an annual basis. After your subscription period ends, the online services will no longer work.

Quicken 2016 or Older
Updates are only available for currently-supported versions of Quicken. Quicken 2016 and older versions are no longer supported. If you are reinstalling Quicken 2016 to use without connected services, you will still need to install the latest update patch to complete the registration process.And for individuals who want their data stored offline, Quicken is still the best bet. Existing users of earlier versions who still want to use Quicken should probably upgrade to this version, as it does improve some of the previous annoyances.
Quicken Online is finally free. Intuit drops the subscription fee for its Web-based financial software and is readying an iPhone version. In a market with free (and very good) competitors, there was just no reason to pay for Quicken Online. This is a smart move on Intuit's part.
In April 2020 you will have to buy the subscription service thru Quicken. Therefore, you will be wasting your money now if you are going to use it to manage your investments. If you don't plan on using it for your investments or downloading banking transactions then it's a good basic product.
You can buy this "membership" for 12 months directly from Quicken, or for 24 months from retailers like Staples etc. Note that this is not a cloud based service, the Quicken application and your data file are still on your machine. So it all comes down to the cost.
Quicken is a personal finance management tool developed by Quicken Inc. (formerly part of Intuit, Inc.). On March 3, 2016, Intuit announced plans to sell Quicken to H.I.G. Capital; terms of the sale were not disclosed.

While they're similar apps, each has its own specializations. And perhaps the biggest difference between the two is that while Quicken is a paid service, Mint is completely free. Quicken offers more services than Mint, which may more than justify the fee you're paying for the service.
What happens if your subscription expires or you don't renew? Do you lose access to Quicken? No, you don't lose access to Quicken. You'll still be able to use Quicken to view all your data, enter transactions manually, and view/print reports.
The Data Access Guarantee applies to Deluxe and higher versions of Quicken; the Starter version will become read-only upon membership expiration or cancellation. Why can't I renew my Quicken Membership? You can only renew your subscription in the last six months of your subscription term.
The Microsoft Corporation, in the software industry's largest acquisition ever, agreed today to acquire Intuit Inc., the producer of the leading personal finance program, Quicken, in a stock swap valued at about $1.5 billion.
In 2019, the pricing for various models of Quicken is as follows: Quicken Starter: $34.99. Quicken Deluxe: $44.99. Quicken Premier: $67.99.
If Quicken runs slowly when opening the program
If Quicken is slow to open, this could be caused by alerts updating during launch. You can turn alerts off to improve performance. To do this: Go to Edit menu > Preferences.As with many financial products, Quicken uses bank-level 256-bit encryption to keep your data secure. It also uses multiple firewalls and checks to ensure that your data stays secure as it's coming into Quicken. You can also decide to password protect your data files in Quicken for an additional layer of security.
What happens when my Quicken membership expires? Access to online services, such as transaction download, quotes, and mobile sync, along with access to Quicken Support, will end if your subscription does. Quicken still has the edge on its rivals in terms of: * Privacy and security. Unlike Web-based tools, all your financial information are stored on your own hard drive (not on the service providers'). Mint.com has never been hacked and touts its security.
QuickBooks and Quicken are financial management tools owned by Intuit. QuickBooks is a full-featured business and management suite with all the tools that a small business would need, but it's also costlier.
