Every MetroCard has a number on the back that you can use to track your card. Typically this is done only when cards are lost or stolen, but if circumstances permit, the number can be used to track use of the card for other reasons by using an MTA Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request.
Subway and bus rolloutToday, you can tap and go throughout New York City using your own contactless card or smart device.
Using a MetroCardSwipe your card through the reader at a medium speed, similar to how you would swipe a credit card in a credit card reader. When the turnstile screen says GO, proceed through the turnstile.
Every MetroCard can be refilled in increments of 7 or 30 days' worth of unlimited ride time, or with pay-per-ride value, but time is used before value unless the time on the card cannot be applied to the ride taken. The 7 Day Express Bus Plus card is the only unlimited card that can be used on express buses.
OMNY is available at all subway stations and on all buses, allowing you to tap and go throughout New York City. You can use OMNY with your own contactless card or smart device.
After two rides, you'll be left with just $0.28 on your card. Then, say you add $20 to that card. With the MTA bonus, you will really get $21, and your new balance will be $21.28.
Commuters who rely on the authority's sprawling network of trains, buses, bridges and tunnels will also see fare and toll increases of about 4 percent. On April 21, the price of a weekly MetroCard will rise to $33, up from $32. A monthly pass will increase to $127, up from $121.

Other options for paying reduced fares
- A valid driver's license from any state (or legal equivalent issued to nondrivers)
- A valid passport from any country.
- A NYC Department of Aging ID card.
- A Medicare card.
- An Access-A-Ride ID card or an MTA Reduced-Fare ID card (pre-1995)
With OMNY, you can use your own contactless card or smart device to ride with the MTA. Just choose your preferred payment method, tap at an OMNY reader, and go! Where can I use OMNY? OMNY is available at all subway stations and on all MTA-operated buses in New York City.
The base cost of riding a Select Bus Service bus is $2.75, the same as riding the subway or the local or limited-stop bus.
The free MetroCards are awarded to workers due to a collective bargaining agreement with the transit union, and even high-ups like MTA head Jay Walder receive the freebies. An additional 52,000 NYPD officers also receive free passes, as well as 701 MTA police officers.
You have up to a year after the expiration date on the card to transfer the balance at a booth, a MetroCard Vending Machine or by mailing it in to MetroCard Customer Claims. We issue a replacement card for the remaining value on your Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard. We don't provide cash refunds.
Technically, you could swipe three times, and assuming each swipe registered (the display window will say "Go") you could then walk through one after the other.
Ortiz added that MetroCards have an expiration date because wear and tear on the cards can eventually render their magnetic strips unusable.
Right now, each ride via OMNY costs the full $2.75 fare, but the MTA says it will add time-based, reduced fare, and student fares to OMNY once it's available throughout the system.
You can combine the values of multiple Pay-Per-Ride cards by going to the information booth and asking the attendant to combine them for you. When you do so, only the current balances are accumulated; the $1 fee for each card is not taken into account.

In total, the MTA will take in $16.725 billion in 2019. The MTA's largest funding source is revenue we collect from customers. 50% of our revenue come from tolls (money paid crossing bridges and tunnels) and Farebox Revenue (money paid to ride subways, buses, and trains).
The MTA is governed by a 21-member Board. Members are nominated by the Governor, with four recommended by New York City's mayor and one each by the county executives of Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Dutchess, Orange, Rockland, and Putnam counties (the members representing the latter four cast one collective vote).
