Bulls guard Zach LaVine underwent an MRI on his injured ankle Friday night. LaVine will miss the Bulls' next two games, at least, according to head coach Jim Boylen. LaVine appeared to injure himself on the last play of the game Thursday against the Magic.
The Chicago star had actually decided to take a new number — 45 — since his 23 was already retired in 1994. The very next season (1995-96), the 'MJ' of old was back in his legendary number 23 outfit. He led his side to an outstanding 72-10 win-loss record in the regular season.
Though it's one of the most iconic numbers in basketball history, No. 23 has been retired by only six different teams, in honor of five different players. Both the Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat retired it for Michael Jordan, even though Jordan never played for the Heat.
Top 10 best Chicago Bulls players ever
- Scottie Pippen: Pippen was the ultimate wingman to Michael Jordan, but he was a dominant player in his own right.
- Michael Jordan: One of the top five players of all-time–and arguably the best–Jordan had a knack for doing it all: scoring, defending, and winning.
-- Dennis Rodman said Friday night that he will be enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Rodman revealed the news during the Chicago Bulls' 101-96 win over the Detroit Pistons, who retired his No. 10 jersey at halftime. An emotional Rodman said he isn't sure he deserves the Pistons' tribute.
LeBron James to wear number 23 with the Lakers. When he left Cleveland for Miami in 2010 and switched from number 23 to number 6 James said that the move was a tribute to Jordan, his idol growing up.
According to ESPN, he chose the number based on his Adidas camp number, 143. It adds up to eight, and was the number he wore in Italy when he was younger. Ahead of the Lakers retiring both jersey numbers, Bryant broke down how his persona and attitude were different with the two.
The Heat retired Jordan's number 23 jersey in April 2003 to honor Jordan's achievements and contributions in basketball. The Heat is the only NBA team other than the Chicago Bulls to have retired the number 23 jersey in honor of Jordan.
On March 18, 1995, Jordan announced his return to the NBA through a two-word press release: "I'm back." Although he could have opted to wear his normal number in spite of the Bulls having retired it, Jordan instead wore number 45, as he had while playing baseball.
