Peloton loses $1.5bn in value over 'dystopian, sexist' exercise bike ad. Almost $1.5bn (£1.1bn) has been wiped off the value of the exercise bike firm Peloton after a backlash against a Christmas advert widely derided as “sexist and dystopian”.
Peloton later confirmed to me that instructors cannot see users' heart rate, and that they only see output, cadence, and resistance. But there's also no opt-out for any of this, and there's no way to limit visibility of specific metrics once you've opted into a class.
In its second earnings report since going public in September, Peloton said its net losses widened to $55.4 million, or 20 cents per share, from a net loss of $55.1 million a year earlier. Peloton reported more than 712,000 such subscribers at the end of the second fiscal quarter, up 96% from about 362,000 a year ago.
Peloton Interactive Inc. PTON 1.39% posted its first-ever quarterly profit as revenue nearly tripled, capitalizing on surging demand for at-home fitness gear during the coronavirus pandemic. Total revenue was $607.1 million for the fiscal fourth quarter ended June 30, up sharply from $223.3 million a year ago.
How Much Do Peloton Instructors Make? Although Peloton is not officially sharing their salaries, it is believed that the instructors make $500 to $750 per class. With 10 to 15 classes taught in a week, an instructor could rake in up to $585.000 annually (52 weeks/year * 15 classes/week * 750$).
Since that acquisition, a majority of its products are made in Peloton-owned factories. The additional factory in Taiwan will help to get production up to par.
Note that the Peloton doesn't ever go on sale, in the traditional sense. Black Friday deals, referral codes, or military/health discounts are typically the only way to save money on the purchase of new Peloton bike or tread, and this just gets you free accessories.
Up 166% since its IPO last September, Peloton Interactive's (NASDAQ:PTON) stock has been on an impressive run. Given the increased focus on finding ways to stay fit and work out at home as the coronavirus continues to spread, this is not surprising.
Since mid-March, Peloton shares have rallied about 350%, sending Foley's net worth to $1.2 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
The price, about $4,300, makes the Peloton Tread the most expensive model by far in Consumer Reports' treadmill ratings. For some, however, it just might be worth it. After CR's experts put the machine through the same tests used to rate 41 other treadmills, the Peloton Tread earned our top spot.
A highly devoted customer base. Peloton has sold over half a million connected fitness products, including bikes and treadmills. The business model is simple: Sell the hardware and then get customers hooked on subscriptions to online fitness classes for $39 per month.
The company was founded in 2012. The number of classes that Peloton owners can stream to the 22-inch touchscreen tablet mounted to their home-based bikes. The number of bikes sold, at $1,995 each, over the past two and a half years.

While not much cheaper than the Peloton, the NordicTrack Commercial S22i Studio Cycle is probably the best option when it comes to comparable feature sets — they're practically the same. NordicTrack also includes a one-year membership to these workouts in the purchase price of the S22i, which is another advantage.
