The idea of Cummins parts in a Caterpillar machine seems odd, but the shrinking world of industry consolidation will result in the use of Cummins-sourced selective catalytic reduction equipment on the Navistar-supplied diesels in Cat vocational trucks.
But the company opted to withdraw from the truck engine business in 2010 rather than invest in a costly upgrade of its exhaust treatment system to comply with stricter federal regulations on diesel emissions. Caterpillar's trucks feature engines built by Navistar.

Introduced mid-2003, the Ford 6.0L turbo is by far the worst modern diesel engine. It's so bad, in fact, that Navistar (Powerstroke's parent company) and Ford had a legal battle over it. The list of issues ranges from head gasket problems to catastrophic fuel system failures.

Peterbilt has announced its Model 379-127†and Model 379X will now optionally offer the Caterpillar C15 engine rated at 600 or 625 hp.
