This is due to the always-listening feature in Cortana. You can disable it by going into Cortana settings easily. Open start menu and type in Cortana. You will notice that a result that reads Cortana & Search settings will pop up.
Fix it now!
- Press Windows key and type “Cortanaâ€. You can alter Cortana settings to stop random pop-ups.
- Select “Cortana & Search settings†from the search results. You should disable "Hey Cortana" command to avoid annoying pop-ups.
- Find “Let Cortana respond to Hey Cortana†and turn the option off.
Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Search. Locate the “Allow Cortana†setting in the right pane and double-click it. Set the Allow Cortana option to “Disabled†and then click “OKâ€.
Simply right-click on any empty space on the taskbar, go to Search, and then change “Show search box†to either “Show Cortana icon†or “Hiddenâ€. If you change it to an icon, it'll show a circle like you can see below. And if you disable it entirely, it'll be removed from the taskbar.
To remove Cortana from Windows 10, use these steps:
- Open Start.
- Search for PowerShell, right-click the top result, and select the Run as administrator option.
- Type the following command to uninstall Cortana from Windows 10 and press Enter: Get-AppxPackage -allusers Microsoft.549981C3F5F10 | Remove-AppxPackage.

How to disable Cortana
- Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + Esc.

- Select Cortana.

This will disable the Cortana service from running when your PC starts up. Restart your PC to confirm that the service no longer runs at startup.

Not being able to turn off Cortana can be a problem for some users. Disable Cortana registry – One way to disable Cortana is to modify your registry. To do that, simply locate the Cortana key and set the AllowCortana DWORD to 0. In case you don't have this value, you'll have to create it manually.

In the settings that open up, scroll down to the bottom of the page and look for Choose which apps can use voice activation.
