Simply press Fn + Del or the Fn + Backspace buttons. A screen brightness indicator pops up on the top left corner of the screen. You can play with the slider to continue adjusting the screen brightness.
If your screen automatically dims or brightens, this is likely due to either Auto adjust screen tone, Power Saving mode or possibly the Adaptive Display screen mode.
You can use that to adjust your brightness, but if you want to turn off adaptive brightness altogether, tap on the Settings gear icon in the bottom right corner. Tap on “Display” Tap on “Adaptive brightness.” This will bring you to a screen where you can toggle it on or off.
To Enable or Disable Adaptive Brightness in Settings
- Open Settings, and click/tap on the System icon.
- Click/tap on Display on the left side, and check (on) or uncheck (off) Change brightness automatically when lighting changes for what you want on the right side under Brightness and color. (
Go to settings - display. Scroll down and move the brightness bar. If the brightness bar is missing, go to control panel, device manager, monitor, PNP monitor, driver tab and click enable. Then go back to settings - dispay and look for the brightness bar and adjust.
Have you ever noticed that the screen on your Surface will never stay at the brightness level you want? It's probably because the adaptive brightness feature is enabled.
To recalibrate the setting, turn auto-brightness off in Brightness & Wallpaper settings. Then go into an unlit room and drag the adjustment slider to make the screen as dim as possible. Turn auto-brightness on, and once you head back into the bright world, your phone should adjust itself.
Simply press [Fn + Del] to increase or the [Fn + Backspace] buttons to decrease the display brightness. Of course, you can also use the new display brightness buttons in the Action Center with presets at 25, 50, 75 and 100 percent increments.
Open Start Menu > Type Device Manager and open it. Find Display Adapters in the list. Click on it to expand and right-click on the relevant display driver. Select Update Driver Software from the menu to fix the Windows 10 brightness control not working issue.
Find and click "Change advanced power settings". Now find "Display", expand it and find "Enable adaptive brightness". Expand it and ensure that both "On battery" and "Plugged in" are set to "Off". Restart the computer and see if this solves the screen brightness control problem.
Force shutdown the device and restart: Press and hold the power button until the screen turns off (about 10 seconds), then release the power button. Press and release the power button to turn your Surface back on. You should see the Microsoft logo.
Press and hold Volume Up (on the left side) and the Power button at the same time for at least 15 seconds. [You may see the screen flash the Surface logo but continue to hold for 15 seconds.] Release both buttons and wait 15 more seconds. Turn on the Surface as usual.
Random shutdown can be associated with several issues: it can be heat related, failing hardware, issues with Windows, and it can be because of a virus or malware.
It sounds like your Surface may be overheating and shutting down is the only way that a computer can save itself in that situation. The likely culprit is Google Chrome. A full factory restore would fix that, but try not using Chrome first and lets see how it goes.
