It is loosely based on the 1997 sequel novel, Angel Of Darkness. The second series was ordered by TNT in 2018. Two years later, the series was finally released on 19 July 2020. The Alienist season 2 is available to stream on Netflix.

Parents need to know that The Alienist is a dark, violent drama based on Caleb Carr's best-selling 1994 novel. Set in 19th-century New York, it revolves around a series of gruesome child murders.
By the finale, viewers knew who was behind the series of baby kidnappings sweeping New York. The culprit was the former Elsbeth Hunter who was now known as Libby Hatch (Rosy McEwen). She had been confined to an asylum for many years for the attempted murder of her mother.

In the end, the real killer was confirmed to be John Beecham/Japheth Dury (Bill Heck), a mentally unstable former corporal working at the census bureau. Moore and Kreizler managed to pursue him down to a reservoir after going through Beecham's apartment and finding a heart in a box.
