Each character in Mario Kart 8 belongs to one of three different weight classes: Light, Medium and Heavy. As you'd expect, lighter characters have lower overall speed but also much faster acceleration, while heavier characters get off the grid more slowly but have a zippier maximum speed.
Check for low battery. While the kart is in use, the "gas" icon on the top-left corner of the screen will indicate the kart's battery charge. If it is low, be sure to charge the kart. Check the in-game environment.
While you might not notice at first, every coin you collect increases your speed by a small percentage. The effect maxes out at 10 coins. In addition, each time you collect a coin, you get a small speed boost.
The name "Wario" is a portmanteau of "Mario" with the Japanese adjective warui (悪ã„) meaning "bad"; hence, a "bad Mario" (further symbolized by the "W" on his hat, an upside down "M"). Official Nintendo lore states that Wario was a childhood rival to Mario and Luigi who became jealous of their success.
Tilt controls allow you to steer your racing vehicle by tilting the Joy-Con to the left or right as opposed to steering with the control stick.
Check where your rivals are on the map and then deploy items strategically. While holding , press and hold and press or to power-slide sideways through turns.
Driving Techniques. Powerslides: To perform a powerslide, simply press the L or R trigger while turning in either direction.
Snaking is a technique for experienced players that allows the user to continuously drift back and forth to perform Mini-Turbos on a straightaway. Snaking is easily done by lighter Karts with extreme acceleration and handling, low drift and powerful mini-turbos, mainly the Egg 1, Dry Bomber, and Poltergust 4000.
The differences between Manual and Automatic are the drifting and boosting. With Automatic drifting, your car will automatically power-slide around the corner, but will not boost; with Manual, you can drift as you see fit, and boosts are enabled.
In Super Mario Kart, drifting is essential, lest the kart spin out. Beginning with Mario Kart 64, powersliding allowed players to gain a short burst of speed known as a Mini-Turbo. It is possible to Mini-Turbo in every MK game after Super Mario Kart. However, the technique varies slightly from game to game.
Hold down the R button while turning to initiate a drift, then maintain it for a specified period of time for a mini-turbo. At first blue sparks will appear, then orange, then pink — that last level is known as an ultra mini-turbo and is unique to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
But up to four people can play Mario Kart 8 on the SAME console, and you only need one copy of the game for that. If you have two switches for two kids, you will need to buy one game for each console if they want to play the game on their own console or one of them have to take his switch to college when school starts.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe supports wireless play, allowing up to 8 players to connect multiple Nintendo Switch consoles together via a local wireless connection.
At any point during gameplay, press the + Button (Menu). Select Two Players, then press the A Button (Start in Two-Player Mode). Decide who will be Mario and who will be Cappy, and choose the controller type for each player (each player can use a single Joy-Con, a pair of Joy-Con controllers, or a Pro Controller).

Open “Controller†in the HOME menu, and press both SL and SR buttons on the Joy-Con. This will register the Joy-Con as “horizontally held,†and you will be able to operate just with one Joy-Con. By registering both the left and the right Joy-Cons, two users can play with just one set of Joy-Cons.
Complete these steps
- Create a wired Internet connection on each Nintendo Switch system.
- When all of the desired Nintendo Switch systems are connected, have a player create a room and act as a lobby host.
- Have the other players join the room.
- Have the host select the game type and settings, and then start the match.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe offers a few different muliplayer modes: Multiplayer: Up to 4 players can use one Nintendo Switch console to race on a variety of different courses. Online Play: Race against other players from around the world in a variety of different modes (Regional, Tournaments, Friends, etc).
To disable motion controls entirely while using Joy-Cons, go to the Main Menu and select Settings in the bottom left corner. From there, hit A on Control Mode to change it from Motion Controls to Button-Only Controls. You can fine-tune this a little by having motion controls on for aiming or using the camera.
On the kart selection screen, hit the plus or minus button to gain options for motion control, auto-accelerate and smart steering. Then hit the L button or tap the screen's smart steering icon. You can easily change this during the race from the pause menu.
Press the button shown next to the Tilt Controls icon to toggle this feature ON / OFF. A yellow curved arrow will appear over the icon when the feature is on.

To toggle it either on or off just hit the L button. You'll see the auto-steer icon change to either solid, or have an X over it. The latter means it's off. If you've already started a race then you can turn Smart Steering off by hitting Plus to open the menu.
Smart Steering is a mechanic introduced in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as a way to make gameplay easier. With Smart Steering turned on, the player will auto-pilot along with the road's edges and not be able to go off-road. Sometimes, Smart Steering may cause the chosen path to switch unexpectedly, which may cause frustration.
