Hereditary is a more straight forward horror in comparison to Midsommar. In some ways the dark and gloomy tone to Hereditary means you expect the jump scares and twist and turns it takes a bit more than Midsommar's gory moments, thanks to the latter being bathed in Swedish sunlight.
Peele goes on to call “Midsommar” an “ascension of horror” because of how the story progresses. “I didn't feel victimized,” the director says. “I felt like I was being put up on this pedestal and honored through the eyes of the protagonist.”
"Midsommar" includes plenty of gore, and a truly disturbing sex scene. While much of the film's horror comes from psychologically unsettling events, there's also no shortage of gore. In addition to the gruesome details, "Midsommar" also includes a truly disturbing sex scene.
You won't find any of that in Ari's movies - there aren't any jump-scares to be found in Midsommar. But if you've seen Hereditary, you'll know there are unexpected scares that make you jump - he just believes they earned their place in the film.

In the final act, all of the outsiders except Christian and Dani have “disappeared,” and the midsommar ritual continues with a maypole dancing competition—which Dani wins. Christian does indeed go through with the sex ritual, solidifying his severed ties from Dani.
Parents need to know that Midsommar is an extremely violent horror movie from the maker of Hereditary. It involves a sinister, ages-old ceremony that includes disturbing rituals. Characters are beaten and smashed, and bodies are cut up and burned (in some cases, alive).

Jump Scares in Hereditary (2018) Jump Scare Rating: Jump scares are not a big part of Hereditary although there are a handful of minor jolts throughout. Synopsis: A woman's life begins to unravel after the death of her secretive mother brings on a series of disturbing events.
The cult wins and Peter gets to spend the rest of his days as a host for a demon that murdered his family. Even without the Paimon stuff, Hereditary would still be a deeply sad and disturbing movie about a family in a state of decay through no fault of their own. That's the real horror of Hereditary.
The fact is — and this is a spoiler for Hereditary, which is a good movie that I recommend — they do kill a dog. At the end of the film, the sweet family dog, who only ever served to bark at a demon, is depicted for a moment lying in the grass, presumably dead. His death seems to be included almost as an afterthought.
According to the script of the film, it's an herb. It is later written about, but terribly briefly, when Annie opens her "Mom's Things" box. She finds similar herbs and oils in the same container. It also points to the unidentified woman who dabbed a bit of oil on Annie's mother's dead body at the funeral.
2 Answers. The way I understood that scene was that Steve was trying to obstruct the process. If he had lived and Ann died instead then Steve would have taken his son out of the dangerous situation and Paimon's medium would have been killed thus extinguishing his route into Peter's life.

Written and directed by Ari Aster, the R-rated movie follows Annie Leigh (Toni Collette), who is dealing with the recent death of her estranged mother, Ellen. Ellen suffered from dissociative identity disorder (formerly known as multiple personality disorder) and wreaked havoc on her family.

The scariest event has to be right after Charlie realizes she can't breathe, when Peter shoves her in the car and speeds off to get her to a hospital. Upon seeing an animal in the road, though, Peter swerves right, not realizing Charlie has put her head out the window to try to get more air to help herself breathe.
The story of 1917, which focuses on two your British soldiers racing to deliver a message to another battalion, also gives the movie an extra layer of tension. “There's no jump scares, but it it's about delivering a message against the clock,” she tells Inverse “So it's really a thriller.
It's almost a fun horror episode, because the plot is classic and easy to follow (although there's definitely one big twist), but there are a couple of scares in there that might make you jump if you choose to watch it alone at night. For a CW show, Supernatural certainly has its moments.

Hereditary, the Toni Collette-starring horror movie, has a lot of freaky moments, but the most disturbing Hereditary scene is, hands down, the car scene. When Peter veers the car quickly to avoid the animal, Charlie's head hits a utility pole and she's instantly decapitated.
Self-described horror fan Shapiro said “Hereditary” maintains a sense of realism on a human scale that's often lacking in the genre. “If you think about it, that could happen to anyone. While Midsommar was a psychedelic, disturbing experience, it's pretty much a general consensus among fans of Aster's work, that Hereditary was the scarier film. Ari Aster had his work cut out for him when he made the decision to have a horror movie take place almost completely in broad daylight.
