Quentin's friend Janet is now called Margo
Apparently, the show's producers didn't want viewers to confuse her character with Julia, whose name also starts with a J. (It probably doesn't hurt that "Margo" also sounds a lot cooler and younger than "Janet.")The new Syfy series based on Lev Grossman's novels shares several important traits with the world of the beloved young wizard. When Lev Grossman put pen to paper for The Magicians book series, he was in large part inspired by the expansive world J.K. Rowling had created with her Harry Potter franchise.
He intends to kill the last two, but Julia sacrifices herself to save her friend Asmodeus. Reynard proceeds to rape Julia, leaving her with severe trauma and an extra spark of god-like magic. In Fillory, Eliot, Janet, Quentin, and Julia rule as Kings and Queens, and life is good, if somewhat boring.
The Magicians is a new adult fantasy novel by the American author Lev Grossman, published in 2009 by Viking Press. It tells the story of Quentin Coldwater, a young man who discovers and attends a secret college of magic in New York.
“The Magicians” combines all the essentials – plot, characters, and just plain old good writing – into one of those special books. It is not magic, yet there is something magical that compels me to purchase the next two books in the series. Five stars.
After years of growth, triumphs, and tragedies, Quentin Coldwater is dead—for good. His demise came at the end of a beautifully shot and executed episode; as Quentin watched his friends' emotional tribute to him, complete with an acoustic rendering of “Take on Me,” it's hard to imagine that any viewer emerged dry-eyed.

The Magicians went out with a bang — literally. In the Syfy fantasy drama's climactic series finale, the Brakebills gang succeeded in rapturing every Fillorian onto an ark before they blew up the entire planet and thus defeated the risen dead, led by season 1 big bad Rupert Chatwin.
In the process, though, the show's protagonist, Quentin Coldwater, has to sacrifice himself to save his friends. He dies while defeating the Monster, and the season ends with Quentin being allowed to see his friends for one last time before being escorted into the underworld.
At the end of season 4, The Magicians killed off its ostensible lead character, Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph), and season 5 has explored how his friends are grieving and adjusting to that massive loss while also trying to prevent multiple apocalypses. The Magicians airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. on Syfy.
The death was about him reacting to the fact that his body died, but he was still alive. So we were starting to feel that we risked the audience losing their faith in us if we just brought everyone back.

The last season of The Magicians was a bit of a mess overall, but it concluded with an absolute stunner: the death of starring character Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph). Even if its new season is a bit slower than I would like at the moment, it's still the rare adaptation that's better than its source material.
