If you have a 10-20 gallon tank (or larger) you could try:
- Snakes. Though snakes can be kept in a variety of different types of cages, glass tanks can make an adequate home for your animal provided all it's necessary requirements are met.
- Lizards.
- Hermit Crabs (terrestrial)
Hobbyists have used aquariums as snake cages for as long as people have been keeping them as pets, but aquariums are not ideal cages. Aquariums have length, depth and height suitable for fish, which use available space much differently than snakes do. Ideally, snake cages should have 18 to 30 inches of depth.
Those tanks are absolutely not meant for water! They can hold very minimal water volume because the make of the glass is very thin and water pressure can burst it. The silicone used to put the tank together is also not water safe. How many gallons is the critter cage you own?
You're going to want a 40g breeder fish tank, with no built in lid, so you can make one that works for your needs. They are not designed to hold water, and are not near the glass thickness that the aquariums are.
You can use a fish tank -- or aquarium -- to make a terrarium. The key to making an attractive terrarium that will thrive is to layer gravel, charcoal and soil to create a suitable growing environment for your plants. Once your terrarium is set up, it will require very little care to maintain.
How to Set Up a Reptile Terrarium
- Step 1: Assemble Materials. 2 More Images.
- Step 2: Set Up Tank. The first step to setting up the tank is to thoroughly clean the glass if an aquarium is used.
- Step 3: Add the Substrate.
- Step 4: Add the Decorations.
- Step 5: Add Top and Lighting.
- Step 6: Automation.
- Step 7: Maintenance.
- Step 8: Enjoy Your Animals New Home!

Is there a difference between them? A terrarium is a transparent container that is primarily for plants, while a vivarium can have animals and plants living in it. Then, a paludarium is a type of vivarium that consists of a mixture of terrestrial and aquatic elements.
The rule of thumb is that you should house one frog per five to ten gallons of tank space. More space is always better than less space. Giving your frogs as much space as possible leads to healthier frogs, bolder frogs (you'll see them more in a bigger tank), and allows you more options when designing the terrarium.
Standard Tank Sizes
| US gallons | Litres | Centimeters LxDxH |
|---|
| 10 (leader) | 37.9 | 50.8 x 27.9 x 33.0 |
| 10 (long) | 37.9 | 61.0 x 22.9 x 33.0 |

A vivarium is a wooden structure which can include a substrate, whether loose or fitted, decor or live plants and appropriate equipment such as LED lighting, ceramic heaters and thermostats. Wood is an ideal material as it is a great source of insulation, preventing heat from escaping.
To set up a vivarium for a bearded dragon, start by purchasing a vivarium that is 2 feet by 3 feet by 4 feet in size from a pet store. Since you'll need to control the temperature inside the vivarium, place it somewhere out of direct sunlight and install a UVA, UVB, and basking light.
Aquarium Weights
| Tank Size | Dimensions | Filled Weight |
|---|
| 29 Gallon | 30 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ x 18 3/4″ | 330 lbs |
| 30 Gallon (Breeder) | 36″ x 18″ x 12 | 348 lbs |
| 40 Gallon (Long) | 48″ x 12″ x 16″ | 455 lbs |
| 50 Gallon | 36″ x 18″ x 19″ | 600 lbs |
can you keep leopard geckos in a fish tank? yep as long as you take the water out. setup sounds fine although you don't really need the light and mat, just depends on the height.
If its an aquarium it will be very thickly on there and extend out of the corners themselves onto the glass walls for about 1/2" or less/more depending on gallonage of the tank. A terrarium won't have heavy duty silconing like that, and if it does it will probably hold water anyway.
Should I cover my bearded dragon's enclosure at night? There is no need for it but you can cover your bearded dragon's enclosure at night. Doing so will cut off external sources of light which may not be completely obvious to you; it may also help with optimal temperature management within the enclosure.
Bearded dragons need a hot side and a warm side in their tank, with the hot side being between 95 and 110 degrees, and the warm side being between 75 and 80 degrees during the day, and definitely no warmer than 85.
Yes, bearded dragons do bite, but not often. When they do bite, it is typically for a good reason. The bite of a bearded dragon is a small stinging sensation; it doesn't hurt as much as a cat or dog bite. Bearded dragons are known for being very well-tempered.
Here are several different substrates you can use in your bearded dragon terrarium.
- Sand and Similar Materials. In the wild, bearded dragons spend their entire life running across sands and pebbles.
- Reptile Carpets.
- Newspaper.
- Bark and Mulch.
- Ceramic Tiles.
You need to have a lid/cover for your bearded dragon tank to prevent your beardie from escaping (some bearded dragons can be very skilled escape artists). You will want to avoid glass, plastic, or any other type of solid tank-lids that can restrict air flow.
Glass terrariums are also very durable and easy to find at pretty much any pet store. Also, glass terrariums make a good habitat for bearded dragons because the screen lid that goes on top allows for ample air flow and as such, helps keep humidity levels low, just how your dragon like it.
A juvenile bearded dragon should be housed in a 10 gallon glass aquarium tank. The tank size will have to increase as the beardie grows. Adults require a 20-50 gallon long glass aquarium tank.
What you'll notice if it's a male are the two hemipenal bulges on each side of the tail base.
