Plug the other end into the « blue Internet » port on the IP gateway. Plug one end of the network cable (RJ-45) into the « yellow Ethernet » port in the back of the IP gateway. Plug the other end into your computer's network card. Plug the (coaxial) cable into the cable modem.

The gateway device is a requirement for using U-Verse service; there's no getting around it and you can't connect directly to AT&T's network with your own device.

Restart Gateway : Unplug the power connection behind the gateway for ~15 seconds. Plug back in and wait for the broadband light to go green, this can take 2-5 minutes. Connect the orange and orange/white wires (the DSL line) to each phone jack. Inside the house, install a two-jack faceplate on the outlet you wish to connect your VoIP device to. No, AT&T U-Verse doesn't use traditional phone lines anymore. It's all through their fiber optic lines. The phone service they offer as a part of U-Verse is basically internet based, not your old fashioned copper wire land line phone service.
I called to price a basic landline and was told what I wanted would be $27, with a $49 installation fee. I then asked about the price to have a new phone jack put in one of my rooms and was quoted $89.
