We have been hearing about the eventual shutdown of Google Hangouts since 2018 when Google confirmed this, and finally it may be happening. The Hangouts app is now getting its own warning messages, urging users to switch to Chat. “It's time to switch to Chat”, “Hangouts is going away soon, so switch to Google Chat now.
Manage Meet settings
- Sign in to your Google Admin console.
- From the Admin console Home page, go to Apps Google Workspace.
- Click Meet video settings.
- To apply the setting to everyone, leave the top organizational unit selected.
- Choose a setting:
- Click Save.
If you use a Google Workspace account, your administrator may have disabled history customization. If history can be turned off for both of you, it automatically turns off when you chat with someone in a different data region. Settings that block you in Google Chat or another product. How to chat in Google Meet on a desktop computer
- Join the Google Meeting.
- Locate the small speech bubble icon in the upper right corner of the screen and click on it.
- A chat window will open.
- When you are finished, click on the arrow icon to the message field's right.
It is because your computer's administrator user (mostly like the IT department if it is your work computer) blocked installing certain Chrome extensions through group policies.
Student Chat: Students now have the ability to chat with one another in Google Classroom. They see the same button option as previously mentioned, but only have the option to “create a post”.
Unfortunately, Google Meet does not currently have the ability to shift these host controls from participant to another. This means that only the meeting organizer will have access to the host controls.
As an administrator, you can track conversation and discussion activity in your organization using the Google Chat audit log. For example, you can see when a user starts a direct message or creates a room.
While you're on a Google Meet conference call, click on the People icon on the top right corner of the screen. A window will pop up with the list of all call participants. Select the name of the individual you want to mute. You will see the mute icon (three dotted horizontal line).

- On your computer, go to Hangouts at hangouts.google.com or in Gmail.
- Select a conversation.
- At the top of the conversation window, click Settings.
- Select Delete conversation.
- If you're sure you want to delete your conversation, click Delete.
How to delete a Google Hangouts conversation on your mobile device
- Open the Hangouts app on your iPhone or Android.
- Select the desired conversation.
- Tap the three dots in the top-right corner of your screen.
- Select "Options."
- Tap "Delete Conversation."
- Confirm your decision by selecting "Delete" when prompted.
The pin feature brings some control back to the participant by allowing them to select and literally pin whomever they want on the screen. All they need to do is click/tap (depending on the device that you're using) on the pin icon for the participant they want on their screen and the pin feature will do its job.
Remove Google Hangouts from AndroidDrag down the notifications panel and click on the “Settings” cog. Scroll down and click on “Google Hangouts”. Click on the “Force Stop” button and select the “Disable” option.
If you leave the Gmail account page open, but do not compose or access messages in your inbox, or if you don't use the chat feature, the availability status changes to “Idle” automatically after 15 minutes.
Hangouts can be found in the Gmail sidebar and at hangouts.google.com. Google Chat, previously called Google Hangouts Chat, is Google's paid team chat service, provided as part of Google Workspace. If you use Gmail with a company email address, you're already a paid Google Workspace user, meaning you can use Chat.
Disable Last Seen in Hangouts AppTo disable last screen in the Hangouts app on an Android smartphone or tablet, just open the hamburger menu and head to Settings. Here, select your account. Then, tap on the “Share you status” option and just turn off the toggle for “Last seen”.
When you set your status to away, you will show as offline to others, even when you're active, helping you to focus solely on your work uninterrupted. For those still using classic Hangouts, “Show when you were last active” setting will appear as “away” in Google Chat for others.
Users who are online and active will have a green dot next to their icon. Users who are offline also won't have any indicator from the friend list. However, if you open a chat window, a message will appear that tells you they are not on Hangouts right now.
Active just now means they are logged in and are using the tab/window on their browser. If they're on their phone it means they are using the app right now. It doesn't necessarily mean they are chatting right now, but if you message them you have a good chance of receiving a response. Pearl DeLeon.
Also, you can verify that email address is not public inside of aboutme.google.com but if you are emailing the user via Gmail or the conversation in Hangouts started by email address, then they will see it but they will only see the email address that is part of the conversation not any other email addresses of yours
If you use Google Talk or Google Chat for messaging with your office, you can signal that you don't want to receive messages by changing the green icon status. All you have to do is click on the status menu and pick a new status to display.
You can tell that someone is available on classic Hangouts by the green dot on their profile picture. These people will be notified about new messages immediately. You can also see when someone was last seen on classic Hangouts if they have the setting turned on.
