SWM stands for "single-wire multiswitch" and the SWM8 is a single-wire multiswitch that can control up to 8 DIRECTV satellite tuners.
SWiM stands for Single Wire Multiswitch, and it's a proven technology from DIRECTV that was first rolled out to customers in 2007. The idea is to make installing and managing a DIRECTV system simpler and more like a cable television system.

You don't need an internet connection for DIRECTV service. But if you can live with that, then you don't need an internet connection. If it's a wire, just disconnect it, or if you're connected over Wi-Fi, go to the Menu, to Settings & Help, Settings, Internet Setup, and Reset Network Connection.
It kinda, already is. DIRECTV's SWM system, in use since 2008, allows for a single wire to go to every receiver, client or DVR. Using the older “legacy” system you needed one line for every tuner, meaning a DVR would need either 2 or 5 lines to it.
A SWM (Single Wire Multiswitch) System consists of either a satellite dish with SWM Technology built in, or a multiswitch with SWM Technology. SWM Dishes are identified by having a single output, and are the only dish to require a power supply.
B-Band converters allow your satellite receiver to collect a wider array of HD channels from your DirecTV satellite service. The B-Band converter is an external device that is installed in between your satellite dish and the receiver, and it does not require any additional tools to hook up to your equipment.

So the SWM-8 sits outside with the dish, and the power source is installed inside the house. The cable from the SWM goes into the power inserter, and then the power inserter has an output that carries the SWM signal on to the receivers. That output of the power inserter is low-voltage.
