SOLIDWORKS, as you might gather from its name, is primarily a solid modeler. It is parametric, which means you assign dimensions to your geometry that tell it how to behave. In this way, you can capture design intent.
Description: Surface Modeling teaches you how to build freeform shapes using SOLIDWORKS mechanical design automation software.
To add a symbol to Note text:
- Insert or select a Note.
- Double-click the note and place the pointer in the text where the symbol is to be inserted.
- In the Note PropertyManager, click Add Symbol .
Annotations are used to indicate comments and notes on drawings and diagrams in the process of their checking and revision, sometimes called “red-lining”.
Shading is used traditionally in drawing for depicting a range of darkness by applying media more densely or with a darker shade for darker areas, and less densely or with a lighter shade for lighter areas. Light patterns, such as objects having light and shaded areas, help when creating the illusion of depth on paper.
Inserting 3D Annotations
- In a part or assembly, click a tool on the Annotation toolbar.
- Click to place the symbol in the model.
Click
Tools > Options > Document Properties > Views > Other. Select Add view label on view creation. Click OK.
To manually add a view label to a drawing view:
- Right-click in the drawing view and click Add View Label.
- Double-click the icon.

The drop-down list is showing available layers to make active and the icon next to the list is the Layer Properties. The Layer Property dialog box is where all the information is stored and managed. To create a layer, simply click the New button on the right side. This will create a new row in the layers list.
You can view layer properties from the Layer Properties panel. To open the Layer Properties panel for a layer: From the tree view, expand Layers , right-click a layer, and click Properties.
Layers are the primary method for organizing the objects in a drawing by function or purpose. Layers can reduce the visual complexity of a drawing and improve display performance by hiding information that you don't need to see at the moment.
To access the CommandManager: Click Tools > Customize. On the Toolbars tab, select Enable CommandManager. Click OK.
To implement document layer defaults:
- Create layers for a drawing in SOLIDWORKS.
- Click Options (Standard toolbar).
- Select a detail, such as Dimensions > Chamfer, from the Document Properties tab.
- For Layer, select a layer for the detail.
The following properties can be set for a layer in the Layer Properties Manager:
- Color: Changes the color of objects on the layer.
- Linetype: Changes the linetype of objects on the layer.
- Lineweight: Changes the lineweight of objects on the layer.
