Marella Explorer Dress Code
The ship is casual during the day -- think shorts, t-shirts and flip-flops -- due to its locations (summer in the Med and winter in the Caribbean). One night on a seven-night cruise is "Dress to Impress" night, which has replaced gala evenings or formal nights.Tui and, by extension, Marella have no pretensions to be a luxury brand. This ship is aimed squarely at mid-market cruisers. The main Reception onboard -- though lacking the "wow" factor found on many ships in terms of a huge atrium -- is understated luxury.
Marella Cruises' newest ship, Marella Explorer, was launched in May 2018, and with a capacity of 1,924 passengers it's the line's largest vessel. Marella inspires loyalty with its long-serving staff and repeat passengers from the line's days as Thomson.
For winter 2019-2020, the ship is deployed to the Caribbean and homeported in Bridgetown (Barbados). In 2020 winter, it sails a 14-night Atlantic Explorer out of Malaga to Barbados.
All our ships are non-smoking, which means you can only smoke in designated areas of the open deck. Smoking isn't permitted on cabin balconies, either. As for e-cigarettes, you can use these in the designated areas on deck.
Just back from holiday including cruise on discovery 2. You can pay to get laundry done, but there is no launderette that you can use yourself, which we have found on other cruise lines.
Leave your big, fluffy towels at home and take advantage of the oversized, blue towels in your stateroom. You can use the towels on the ship and even while in port. Each evening, leave your blue towel out for your stateroom steward and you'll have a fresh towel waiting for you upon your return.
There is one formal night per cruise and, despite Marella Cruises operating more relaxed dress codes, passengers still like to dress up. On formal nights, men require a dinner jacket or tuxedo and women a cocktail or evening dress.

Smoking isn't permitted on cabin balconies, either.

Once a week there is a formal night of sorts, this is often called the dress to impress night and provides an opportunity for guests to dress up should they want to. They dress code doesn't apply to all restaurants and guests not wanting to take part don't have to.
A balcony may absolutely be worth it to you, but probably not if these are your primary reasons: 1) You're looking for a place to smoke. You can't smoke on cruise ship balconies. Guest demand has made most areas on most ships non-smoking, but in this case the reason is largely safety.
