This destruction led to the deaths of about 5 million animals each year, totalling 9.1 million mammals, 10.7 million birds, and 67.1 million reptiles.
Despite government regulations Indonesia's forests are still being cleared for palm oil, pulp wood, logging and mining. Palm oil continues to be one of the leading drivers of deforestation and Indonesia is the largest producer of palm oil.
Deforestation and tree-clearing is the major cause of habitat loss for many threatened and endangered species. In Asia, this includes orangutans, tigers, rhinos and elephants, some of which are on the brink of extinction.
It is estimated that there are more than 300,000 wildlife species or 17% of the world wildlife live in Indonesia, even though Indonesia's land is only 1.3% of the world's land. Indonesia has the most mammals in the world (515 species) and is inhabited by 1,539 bird species.
All eight species are protected under national and international law.

Although conservation efforts have shown promise, poaching, habitat loss and other factors have endangered many species of rhinoceros. For instance, fewer than 80 Sumatran rhinos remain and no more than 67 Javan rhinos exist, meaning they could all be gone by 2050.

INTERNATIONAL. The IUCN (The International Union for Conservation of Nature) lists the Koala as 'POTENTIALLY VULNERABLE'.
The Bramble Cay melomys (Melomys rubicola) was declared extinct by the IUCN in May 2015 and by the Australian government four years later in 2019. The last sighting of the melomys occurred in 2009 on the coral island Bramble Cay.

1. Western Prairie Fringed Orchid. Platanthera praeclara only exists in five U.S. states in the Midwest. The Endangered Species Coalition estimates that there are only 172 populations of this plant, with merely four with more than 1,000 plants.
