About the Fly Cutter
Fly cutters are used primarily on a milling machine for machining large, flat surface areas. The fly cutter is a single-point cutting tool similar to a lathe tool mounted in a special holder. The cutter can be adjusted to cut up to a 2.00″ (51 mm) diameter and is easily capable of taking a .OD turning: lower RPM but higher torque. Now the amount of force that the tools are seeing is different. For a turret an OD tool will just put pressure on the whole turret and want to push it away in the X and Z and try and rotate it about it's pivot point, but rigidity keeps in it place.
When choosing a boring bar, look at the diameter and length of the hole to be bored. Then choose the proper boring bar based on the diameter to length ratio that will work best for the application.
CNC Cutting Tools

When you use tool nose radius compensation on a CNC Lathe (that means we are using G41 and G42) you have to tell the machine where the cutting point of the turning tool is so that the correct tool path is produced. This is sometimes known as the virtual nose position or the Tool Cutting Point.
Turning inserts are manufactured in a variety of shapes, sizes and thicknesses. The shape can be round to maximize edge strength, diamond-shaped to allow a sharp point to cut fine features, square, or even octagonal to increase the number of separate edges that can be applied as one edge after another wears out.

The biggest difference between these two types of milling machines is the orientation of the spindle. With vertical milling machines, the spindle features a vertical orientation. While vertical milling machines usually have long and thin cutting tools, horizontal milling machines have shorter and thicker cutting tools.
