Members of The American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary and Sons of The American Legion comprise the Legion Family, which has a combined membership of nearly 3 million.
The VFW is not ALL for veterans of a foreign war. The American Legion accepts members of the Merchant Marines, whom were given Veteran Status in the 1980's. The VFW continues to NOT accept Merchant Marines for membership. The American Legion is far larger organization with more members and more resources.
The major difference that I'm aware of is that the American Legion offers membership to any former members of the armed forces. The VFW as it's name implies only accepts members who have been deployed in support of armed conflict.
Eligibility Requirements for American Legion MembershipIf you have served federal active duty in the United States Armed Forces since December 7, 1941, and have been honorably discharged or are still serving - you are eligible for membership in The American Legion!
They can either pay the $18.50 per year for a lifetime membership, get a regular membership for $40 a year, or sign up for a national lifetime membership.
Players born in 2002 or 2001, must play in the Senior Legion Baseball program. Players (age 12 and under) born in 2008 and after are not eligible to play American Legion Baseball. Players born in 2000 or before are no longer eligible to play American Legion Baseball.
