Most clubs require members to spend a minimum on food and beverage each month ($50-$100 at some, more at others). Even if you never have a soda or a sandwich, you'll be required to pay that monthly minimum.
So, do golf club members get value for money? Most keen golfers, however, will probably feel that they do get great value from their clubs. Playing twice a week on average with an official handicap, competitions, roll-ups, social events, mates down the club, good food, friendly atmosphere etc.

If the choice is between a golf membership and a deposit on a property, it's the sensible option to go for the roof over their head. Golfers are now expecting to pay 50% of the green fee, or even less, and that's unsustainable, unless you're going to charge the members even more which they would never countenance.
In the last five years the economic downturn has forced scores of Americans to relinquish their memberships rather than pay average annual dues of $7,000 and initiation fees that can range from $5,000 to $500,000. Dozens of clubs facing cash shortages or foreclosure have closed.

The Bridgestone Senior Players tournament is moving to Firestone in 2019 and will be held from July 8-14. That contract runs through 2022. Bridgestone's CEO cited the cost of sponsorship as the reason the company could no longer sponsor the event.
Part of moving forward at Firestone is, sadly, saying goodbye to the PGA Tour, which moved its WGC event to Memphis this year, ending a 13-year run at the South Course. In its place, Firestone will become the new venue for the Bridgestone Senior Players Championship, the flagship event on the Champions Tour.
Firestone Country Club, where this week's WGC-Bridgestone Invitational is being conducted in Akron, Ohio, may be an exclusive private club, but you don't necessarily have to be a Firestone member or guest of a member to play there. Firestone also has luxury accommodations for out-of-town guests.
