Monogrammed shirts are those which have overlapping letters, usually initials, on the shirt they are printed on. Monograms can be in the form of a script, or letters fashioned to appear as the logo of a business or company.
ADULT
| Shirt Size | Standard Width | Suggested Design Width |
|---|
| Small | 18 inches | 9.5-10.5 inches |
| Medium | 20 inches | 10-11 inches |
| Large | 22 inches | 10.5-11.5 inches |
| X-Large | 24 inches | 11-12 inches |
Many embroiderers who work with single lettered monograms usually use letters that are 1 or 4 inches. Stackable monograms are often measured at 3.5 or 4 inches. Spelling out names generally fall at 1, 1.5 and 2 inches.
If all the letters are the same size (also known as block), initials are ordered like your name: first, middle and last. If the monogram features a larger center initial, the ordering is always first name, last name, and middle name.
Most Full Fronts should be placed 2”-3.5” from the front collar.
The left chest design is the most popular placement to be paired with a full back design. The standard sizes are 3.5″ x 3.5″ for adult, 3″ x 3″ for youth, and 3″ x 3″ for a left chest design on a pocket. Most often the left chest design is home for the logo of a company, organization, school, event, etc.
Monogrammed shirts are certainly unnecessary. They are tacky when they are part of a program of ostentation, as they often are, especially when the monogram is visible, such as when it is on a cuff. Monograms should be discreet, on the tail or on the pocket.
Why should I get monogramming? Getting your custom suit monogrammed is the modern day equivalent of claiming your own place amongst the sartorial elite. It tells the world that just like your name, your custom suit is just that – yours. It was made just for you and hence, it will fit no one else as well as it fits you.
