Messenger is a social messaging app attached to Facebook. It currently has 1.3 billion users and is one of the most popular messaging apps. Originally, Messenger started out as a feature that was included as part of Facebook's interface. You needed to be in the Facebook app to access your messages.

SMS fees are pure profit for the cellular carriers. They're basically free for carriers to send, but they can often cost ten cents or more per message. Given these extortionate fees, it's no surprise that a variety of apps are springing up that allow people to send text messages for free and avoid the carriers.
WhatsApp is an alternative to text messaging, also known as SMS. Sending messages in WhatsApp requires an internet connection and doesn't count against your text message limit, so many people use it as a tool for free, unlimited text messages. You may have heard the terms SMS and MMS.
We mean full-on flirting—or more. When social media and texting are added to your relationship equation, it's only natural to wonder where to draw the line. Tech is a big part of our bonding experience with our S.O., which is why texting another person can be considered cheating.
Instant messaging works differently. Messages are sent over the 'net and through the servers of whichever company runs the service. As such, you just need an Internet connection to communicate, whereas with SMS your device needs to be connected to a cellular network.
A text message sent by mobile phone is much quicker to send and receive than an e-mail; it happens in real time. For very urgent or important communications, texting can be useful, especially for business professionals who are out of the office or traveling.
