Splice director Vincenzo Natali has been trying to adapt the Stephen King/Joe Hill short story In The Tall Grass into a film since 2015. Netflix had two King adaptations of their own last year – Gerald's Game and 1922. Soon, they'll have another: In The Tall Grass.
Inside this time loop they die over and over again, killed by Ross Humbolt, and their only hope of redemption is to touch a sinister black rock inside the field, which will gift them with the knowledge of how to leave the tall grass - while also making it so that they never want to.
When Becky asks what she's eating, Cal says it's grass, but she soon realizes that she's eating her stillborn baby, and that Cal is actually Ross. As such, it's Cal who tricks Becky into eating her baby, as she was weak and dehydrated and needed to get her strength back.
Stephen King and Joe Hill's novella, “In the Tall Grass,†is an unfortunate piece of anti-abortion propaganda and an OK horror film. Directed by Vincenzo Natali, the mystery thriller focuses on two families that become trapped in an inescapable field of grass as a result of their own choices.
Travis fears the responsibility of fatherhood. In the end, he touches the rock as a way to help Tobin – now an orphan – escape the time loop that will punish him forever otherwise, thus overcoming his fear and acting as a good father would, even if it means sacrificing himself.
Travis is also saved, even though he dies. We see the fate of those who succumbed to the rock's evil when Becky gives birth in front of it. The ground opens, and it's revealed those damned souls were absorbed into its roots where they were made to suffer for eternity. They will never escape the grass.
By giving its key characters a sort of happy ending, or a semblance of one, the film closes its door on a direct sequel. The only way I see this work now is through new characters stepping into the endless tall grass field exploring new horrors since the opportunities there too are practically limitless.
