What was Colombina's Character and Personality? Colombina may be a flirtatious and sometimes a capricious character but she plays an important role in Commedia dell'Arte. She is an efficient, carefree servant who is intelligent enough to have achieved a higher status.
Lazzi are essentially "gags" or stock jokes which can be added into a commedia dell'arte play or performance in order to ensure the comic action keeps pace. Traditionally the writers and actors in a troupe would have lazzi memorized so that they could insert them where needed.

Il Dottore is representative of the learned intellectual class, and as such is meant to playfully parody the educated elite.
SPEECH: He 'parps' like a trombone. Pronounces 's' as 'sh' and traditionally speaks a tumbled mix of made-up words embellished to make them sound important and learned. CHARACTERISTICS: He specialises in everything; there is no subject on which he is not an expert.
He switches his feet a lot while speaking or listening within the same position, and without his head moving up and down. Zanni's elbows are usually bent and arms half lifted. Zanni also has a variety of poses.
While the theories of the St Pantaleone and the lion of St Mark are common, they are both now considered unlikely origins, and the true origin is unknown. The name Pantaloon generally means "old fool" or "dotard". The role of Pantalone is usually spoken entirely in the Venetian dialect.
Il Capitano's run is prompted by any loud sound, scary object or from being overwhelmed. When this happens, he drops everything, throws his head back, kicks his feet forward and howls is fear. Just like in his walk, he picks his legs up high, but puts them down close to where they started.
Pantaloon, Italian Pantalone, stock character of the 16th-century Italian commedia dell'arte—a cunning and rapacious yet often deceived Venetian merchant. Pantaloon dressed in a tight-fitting red vest, red breeches and stockings, a pleated black cassock, slippers, and a soft brimless hat.
One of the earliest of the commedia characters, he was a descendant of the Miles Gloriosus, the braggart soldier of ancient Roman comedy. An unsympathetic character, he was originally a parody of the French and Spanish mercenaries who overran 16th-century Italy.
A mask helps to create the beautiful, extravagant, repulsive and yet attractiveness of each character. Masks allow the actor to further explore the character. To the audience, the actor's physical movements and embodiment of the stock characters help to establish their character and the mask enhances it.
The Innamorati are the romantic leads -- "Lovers" would be an accurate translation for their title. The male is the inamorato and the female is the inamorata. The Commedia lovers were the only unmasked characters in the show.
The witch, although mainly introduced in the 20th century, is one of the outsiders and is the only connection to supernatural in Commedia. She represents Magnifico of the countryside and is very powerful, dark and vigilant.
