Thanos knows about Stark because he has been watching him through the eyes of his underlings the whole time. This is why he calls Scarlet Witch 'my child' at the end of Infinity War: her powers exist because of him. Thanos knows about Stark's knowledge because Thanos cursed him with It: he corrupted Tony's mind.
Adam Warlock AKA The One is the first comic character to have 'killed” Thanos, by turning him into stone in the epic Marvel Two In One Annual #2 (1977). That 'turn Thanos into stone' scene would have been epic in Endgame! Adam Warlock was actually the first hero to defeat Thanos in the comics.

Metal is famous for it's ability to conduct electricity. Had Thor summoned lightning it would have coursed through the metal hull of the ship killing every last asguardian and Thor would have failed in a most fundamental way as a king all in exchange for maybe killing Thanos.
