The consequences of closing Skype account
Deleting the account permanently removes any data that was associated with it, including your Skype contacts, purchases and chat history. Microsoft says that it might take up to 30 days for your name to disappear from the Skype directory after the account is closed.To access your settings in Skype:
- Select your profile picture.
- Select. Settings.
- Choose from the following settings to make your changes: Note: You can access your Skype settings from any platform or device, but not all settings are available to change on every platform. Account & Profile.
In order for you to delete your Skype account without deleting your Microsoft account, you need to unlink your Microsoft account first. (Disclaimer: It will take some time before the Skype account will be removed from the database.) In the Linked accounts section, click Unlink next to your Microsoft account ID.
Skype no longer deletes inactive accounts as they've been merged with Microsoft accounts. Deleting them would have a direct effect on other Microsoft services. However, Skype has previously deleted inactive accounts that haven't been merged with a Microsoft account.
From the Contacts tab, tap and hold or right-click the contact you want to remove. Select Delete contact. In the confirmation window, select Delete contact again. After deleting the contact, they may still be able to see your detailed profile information.
If you want to cancel your Skype subscription, you need to sign into your account. On the left hand side of the screen (beneath your profile picture), any active subscriptions will be listed – select Manage underneath the subscription you want to cancel.
To change your caller identification settings:
- Sign in to your account.
- In the Manage features section, click Caller ID.
- To turn Caller ID on or off, use the toggle at the left side of the screen.
- To change your Caller ID number, click Edit next to your number.
How do I cancel my Skype subscription?

- Select the radio button next to your reason for cancelling, and then select Cancel subscription to confirm your cancellation.
A Microsoft Agent recently (october 2018) wrote in a couple threads that inactive skype accounts get deleted automatically after 2 years or so of inactivity.
Once you have logged onto Skype for Business, you will want to remove your old contacts, and add new contacts to the Skype for Business client. To remove an old contact, use your mouse to click on the old contact and once highlighted right click the old contact. Once of your options is to “Remove from Contact List”.
Go to the Get a Skype Number page. You'll be prompted to sign in if you aren't already. Select the country you want the Skype Number for, and you will be given a number. Select Continue or Show other local numbers to choose a different Skype Number.
To modify or unpublish a number, click the button with the name of the phone number you want to change. Delete or modify the number, and then click OK.
Changing your Skype name on smartphones is straightforward:
- Launch the Skype app.
- Tap your Skype profile image at the top of the page.

The company reserves the right to delete accounts that remain inactive for an extended period of time but does not usually do so.Skype doesn't allow its users to delete their account permanently. You can delete few of your personal information from your account but you can't delete your account permanently. You have to contact their support team and only they can assist you to close your skype account.
