The lake provides water to the Sultan Mahmud Power Station. It is the largest man-made lake in mainland South East Asia with an area of 260,000 hectares.

The largest lake, by both area and volume, is Lake Toba in Sumatra. It holds 240 km³ of freshwater, and is the largest lake body in Southeast Asia. Indonesia has 3 of the 20 deepest lakes in the world - Lake Matano in Sulawesi (590 m), Lake Toba in Sumatra (505 m), and Lake Poso in Sulawesi (450 m).

Chilika lake spread over Puri , Khurda & Ganjam district of Odisha ( orissa ) is the largest lake of Asia spread over 1100 km. It is the largest wintering ground for migratory birds on the Indian sub-continent. The lake is home to a number of threatened species of plants and animals.
The Caspian Sea is the largest lake in the world, having a total area of 371,000 square kilometres, and it actually sits below sea level by 28 metres.
It is the most popular and most visited lake of Nepal. Phewa lake is located at an altitude of 742 m (2,434 ft) and covers an area of about 4.43 km2 (1.7 sq mi).

Lake Superior is the largest of the Great Lakes and ranks as the second largest lake in the world (by surface area).
Great Bear Lake straddles the Arctic Circle in the remote Northwest Territories of Canada. At just over 12,000 square miles, the lake is the eighth largest in the world. It is bigger than Belgium and deeper than Lake Superior, and it is covered in ice and snow most of the year.

Mount Hkakabo in northern Myanmar on the border with China, at 19,295 feet (5,881 metres), is the highest peak of mainland Southeast Asia.
Lake Baikal in southern Russia is the world's deepest lake. It is an estimated 5,387 feet deep (1,642 meters), and its bottom is approximately 3,893 feet (1,187 meters) below sea level. Lake Baikal is also the world's largest freshwater lake in terms of volume.
Both Siamese crocodiles (Crocodylus siamensis) and saltwater crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus) once occurred side-by-side in the lake, and there is thought to be inter-species breeding amongst the crocodiles found in the floating farms on the western part of the Lake in and around Prek Toal.
The Tonle Sap, a combined lake and river system that swells in the rainy season to form Southeast Asia's largest freshwater lake, has for generations supported fishing communities living in floating villages of moored houseboats. Resident Keng Chin said the Tonle Sap water is too dirty even to wash clothes with.
